Into the Wild: Exploring Baekryong Cave in Pyeongchang

by JLB 2025. 8. 12.

It’s been a while since our visit, but this place is simply too good not to share.
Have you ever been to Baekryong Cave in Pyeongchang?

Many of my blog readers are parents with kids, and I know a lot of you are passionate about educational experiences. I wouldn’t be surprised if quite a few of you have already visited.

I’m not really a “cave person” myself—I’ve only been to a handful in Korea. But this trip was the result of a strong recommendation from my friend’s mom. And guess what? I didn’t even go inside! 😂

You see, I have a bit of claustrophobia. I can handle larger caves—like the Amethyst Cave in Ulsan—but Baekryong Cave felt… wild. You have to pass through narrow tunnels, there’s no lighting, and yes, there are bats.

One of Bella’s friends said she saw a bat, but when we went, the guide told us they tend to retreat deeper inside when there are a lot of visitors. So spotting one can be tricky.

I thought we’d be surrounded by families with kids, but that day, our group was just us with our child, plus two couples.

If you’re planning a trip to Pyeongchang, Baekryong Cave is definitely worth adding to your list! You can make a reservation in advance, but we just bought our tickets on-site and joined the tour.

Travel Tip:

  • Wear comfortable shoes—you’ll be walking through uneven and sometimes slippery terrain.
  • Bring a flashlight if you want to see more details in the darker parts of the cave.
  • If you’re not a fan of enclosed spaces, you might want to think twice.

We’re even thinking of going back within the year—our kids absolutely loved it!

The entrance fee isn’t exactly cheap, but after the tour, we all agreed it was worth every won.

According to the official website, visitors aged 65 and above, children under 6, and those with severe disabilities are not permitted inside for safety reasons. So if your child is still very young, it might be better to wait until they’re a bit older before visiting.

At Baekryong Cave, you get fully geared up before entering—clothes, rubber boots, a safety helmet, gloves, and even a headlamp are all provided.

Everything is included in the entrance fee.

Since the cave has no lighting, water pools, and even crawling sections, you absolutely have to wear the full set of gear to go inside.

There’s a changing room with lockers where you must store all personal belongings, including your phone.
The downside is that you can’t take your own photos inside.
But the upside? The guide takes photos during the tour and uploads them to the official website so you can still keep the memories.

To reach the cave entrance, you actually take a boat ride.
There’s a bit of a walk to get to the boat, and because it was so hot that day, I waved goodbye to my group at the entrance instead of joining the ride. 😆

The cave tour takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, which meant it was now my time to enjoy some me-time in peace. 😌

There’s a cool, air-conditioned waiting room with a TV and a water dispenser, so I was perfectly comfortable while I waited.

Right next to the waiting room, you’ll find the changing room and restrooms, making it super convenient.

There were lots of stalactites, stalagmites, and columns inside the cave—but honestly, I didn’t really know much about them.

Around last winter, Bella’s school, Wiseman, did a lesson where they made models of stalactites and stalagmites. So when the guide asked questions, Bella answered them all perfectly! The guide even joked, “Did you study before coming?” 😂
I was amazed that Bella remembered everything months later—meanwhile, I forget what I heard yesterday! 😅

Upstairs from the ticket booth, there’s an exhibition hall where you can learn more about caves. After our tour, we went back upstairs to explore it some more.

Baekryong Cave in Pyeongchang is definitely a great place to visit—whether you’re with family, a partner, or friends.

Highly recommended!
